About Us

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder. People with Thalassemia are not able to make enough hemoglobin, which causes severe anemia. Thalassemia is inherited, that is, it is passed from parents to children through genes. Thalassemia occurs most often among people of Italian, Greek, Middle Eastern, Southern Asian and African descent. Throughout the world, it is estimated that 4.6 million children and adolescents are affected by Thalassemia and everyday hundreds of babies are born with this inherited disorder. Little or no schooling, social or religious stigmatization, and lack of useful information and education all help to spread this genetic disorder.

Blood Donation Camps

The team of the Trust regularly hold and organise Blood Donation camps with the help of NGOs, Societies, Business groups and Professional associations, Industries, Individuals etc. through our Blood Bank Project Partners mainly with a view to replace the quantity of Blood they used to supply to the Trust for Blood Transfusion to the children/kids suffering from Thalassemia Major. We proudly take note that the Blood Coordination team of the Trust has on an average held 4 camps a month since last more than 5 years and collected about.......units

Blood Transfusion

Two Blood Banks-Sarvoday Charitable Blood Centre and Prathma Blood Centre have joined us as the Project Partners for providing quality Blood Components to our children. Both Blood Banks supply the required high quality Blood Products after complying with formalities of taking samples and doing cross matching. Our Blood coordination team replace the blood units to both Blood Banks by organizing Blood Donation camps at various places. The Centre started during the covid period in 2019-20. About 75+ patients are coming regularly every 15-20 days to the Centre.

Bone Marrow Transplant

BMT being the only available proven remedy to fully cure a child suffering from Thalassemia Major, the Trust since last 3 years has offered Free HLA Typing to the children and their families with support from Sankalp India Foundation, Banglore. Such test camps are periodically held at the centre and such samples are sent to a specialised Lab outside the country and on getting the matching report of a child with sibling, such child is prepared for BMT. Once a child is transplanted with Bone Marrow of his/her sibling, after a period of about 4 to 6 months of isolation, treatment and medication, the child becomes normal. We are proud to say that during these 3 years about 18 children from the centre have undergone BMT procedure at Sankalp-CIMS BMT Centre, Ahmedabad and many more are in waiting.

Laboratory Tests and Medicines

All children suffering from Thalassemia Major registered at our Day Care Centre are periodically tested for various medical parameters to be maintained and monitored by the team of medical experts. These tests are like CBC, Monthly tests for CBC, Quarterly tests for Biochemistry and Ferritin, half yearly tests for Ultrasound and Serology, Yearly tests for Echo, ECG and T2* MRI (If needed). There is a prevalent policy of the Government to provide free medicines to Thalassemia Major Children from Govt Hospital but many a times the required medicines are not available or out of stock at such hospital. In such contingencies the required quantity of medicines is provided at the centre by the Trust.

Donation Schemes

The Thalassemia Day Care Centre, Ahmedabad provides all above facilities, services and activities completely free of cost. No charge is levied by the Trust from the parents of Thalassemic Children, being the beneficiaries and end users. Our Trust does not charge anything for Food and Beverages, Recreation, Counselling, all required Laboratory Tests, Medicines, Conveyance of Blood Products, Blood Transfusions, HLA Typing tests, Bone Marrow Transplantation etc. Though providing such services-facilities and running such activities involve a substantial cost and expenditure, we make attempt to cover it all with the kind and generous help of our most esteemed donors.

There are two main forms of Thalassemia
Thalassemia Minor & Thalassemia Major

In minor Thalassemia, treatment may not be required. People with Thalassemia minor dont usually have any symptoms. If they do, its likely to be minor anemia and fatigue. To cope with anemia and fatigue, a low-fat plant based diet and regular exercising would help. In major Thalassemia, apart from a low fat plant based diet, regular blood transfusions are must to treat anemia. This involves blood being given through a tube inserted into a vein in your arm. Its usually done in hospital and takes a few hours each time. Blood transfusions are very safe, but they can cause too much iron to build-up in the body. Usually people with Thalassemia major do not survive after the age of 30. If only the treatment is been followed perfectly, they do have a chance of living till the age of 50-60 max. Treatment to remove excess iron caused by regular blood transfusions is known as Chelation Therapy. Its very important because high level of iron in the body can damage organs. Thalassemia major can also sometimes cause a number of other problems, including.
